This role involves preparing metallographic cross sections for evaluation, including cutting, mounting, and polishing. The technician will also prepare materials for and perform Rockwell hardness testing, as well as microhardness testing on prepared specimens. Responsibilities include assisting with the heat treatment of test specimens according to specification requirements, machining tensile test specimens, and verifying their dimensions with hand tools. The position also entails assisting with the calibration of hand measurement tools and general upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment and workstations. Additionally, the technician will support the Lead Lab Tech in sending testing to external laboratories, participate in internal and external proficiency testing annually, and engage in continuous improvement initiatives. Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor.
