The University of Iowa Health Care department of Food and Nutrition is seeking a full time Laboratory Technician for their Mother’s Milk Bank. This role performs under general supervision, specialized technical procedures and allied duties related to the function of the human milk pasteurization laboratory and assists with donor screening procedures. The technician will assist in the human milk pasteurization activities, performing specialized and focused technical duties essential for pasteurization of human milk, maintaining its immunological and nutritional properties, and adhering to the Holder method, HMBANA Standards, and principles of food safety and sanitation. The role involves collecting, transporting, logging, thawing, pooling, aliquoting, pasteurizing, labeling, storing, and distributing/shipping human milk. Additionally, the technician will assist with milk donor screening and shipment of containers and blood kits, perform data entry, prepare and maintain milk bank records, bill for services, check deposits, order supplies, process charges, and operate a cash register. The position also includes recording and delivering post-pasteurization milk samples, transporting and distributing goods/supplies, demonstrating the pasteurization process to students and others, cleaning and maintaining the laboratory and equipment, monitoring temperature systems, and reporting maintenance issues. The technician will respond to inquiries regarding milk bank business, especially concerning the pasteurization laboratory, orders, billing, and depots/collection sites. They will also assist in training other laboratory technicians and assistants.
