About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Food and Nutrition is seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician for their Mother’s Milk Bank. This role involves performing specialized technical procedures related to human milk pasteurization and assisting with donor screening. The technician will adhere to the Holder method, HMBANA Standards, and principles of food safety and sanitation to maintain the integrity of the milk's properties. The position is 100% time, with a schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, located in Liberty Square.

Requirements

  • Two years of related laboratory experience including one year as Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience, or Certification as a Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA), or Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years.
  • Possession of appropriate driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the human milk pasteurization activities of the Mother’s Milk Bank of Iowa, Department of Food and Nutrition Services.
  • Perform specialized and focused technical duties essential for pasteurization of human milk, maintaining its immunological and nutritional properties, and adhering to the Holder method, HMBANA Standards, and principles of food safety and sanitation.
  • Collect, transport (requires travel to hospitals and depots), log in, thaw, pool, aliquot, pasteurize, label, store, and distribute/ship human milk.
  • Assist with milk donor screening and shipment of containers and blood kits to donors.
  • Perform data entry, prepare and maintain milk bank records, bill for services rendered, check deposits, order (Preq and other), maintain supplies, process charges using eVoucher, operate cash register.
  • Record and deliver post-pasteurization milk samples to Hygienic Lab, transport and distribute goods/supplies.
  • Demonstrate the pasteurization process to students during their rotation modules and to others.
  • Clean and aseptically maintain the pasteurization laboratory and equipment, monitor and add salt pellets to water conditioning system, monitor Temp Trak and freezer/refrigerator temperatures, report maintenance and other issues.
  • Respond to, or may direct response to, inquiries regarding milk bank business, especially as it relates to the pasteurization laboratory, orders, billing and depots/collection sites, hospitals/recipients.
  • Assist in training of laboratory technicians and assistants.
