Requirements

  • Two years of experience as a laboratory technician
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician
  • Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician
  • Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science
  • Must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, accession, track, and process laboratory specimens while maintaining proper chain-of-custody procedures and compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Perform microbiological, physical, and biological testing of specimens to detect, identify, and characterize bacterial pathogens and other substances of public health or regulatory significance.
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and quality of laboratory testing by adhering to established protocols, verifying results, and meeting all acceptance criteria prior to releasing findings.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment in accordance with regulatory requirements, approved procedures, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare laboratory media, reagents, and supplies; receive and distribute incoming specimens and materials; and maintain organized laboratory inventory and documentation systems.
  • Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities, document testing results, participate in proficiency testing, and promptly report deviations, deficiencies, or noncompliance issues to supervisors.
  • Support daily laboratory operations by maintaining a safe and clean work environment, assisting with laboratory records management and administrative tasks, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and laboratory regulations.
