About The Position

The Laboratory Technical Assistant performs phlebotomy and specimen collection, waived laboratory testing, order management, and specimen processing in accordance with established protocols and standards of laboratory practice. The position applies patient safety and management methods, documents specimen flow in the Laboratory Information System, and prepares specimens for dispatch to external laboratories when needed. The assistant also helps orient and train new employees and performs other duties as requested. This is a 0.8 FTE day-shift position at St. Charles.

Requirements

BLS certification within 90 days of hire.

Computer data entry skills.
Phlebotomy experience or certification.
Previous laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

Perform phlebotomy and manage patients during collection, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and, as applicable, arterial puncture and therapeutic phlebotomy.
Prepare patients and collect throat culture, urine, and other requested specimens.
Perform waived-level testing in immunology, urinalysis, chemistry, and hematology, as applicable.
Accurately and efficiently manage patient orders.
Document patient specimen flow in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Process and handle specimens according to requirements, including preparing specimens for dispatch to external laboratories as needed.
Maintain a safe work environment and comply with safe-practice standards and standard precautions.
Assist with new employee orientation and training.
Perform other duties as requested.
