Laboratory Assistant
About The Position
The Laboratory Assistant supports diagnostic and patient care services at St. Bernardine Medical Center by collecting, preparing, and processing patient specimens—including blood, urine, and tissue—for diagnostic testing. The role involves specimen collection from patients across all age groups and assisting with laboratory activities within the scope of unlicensed personnel. Manual or automated procedures requiring measurement, calculation, or interpretation must not be performed by the assistant. The assistant works with Clinical Laboratory Scientists to support review, verification, and validation of laboratory results before release, and contributes to quality improvement and process enhancement initiatives. This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and is covered by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Requirements
- At least six months of experience as a laboratory phlebotomist.
- California Certified Phlebotomy License (CPT) through the Department of Public Health.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures, heelsticks, and fingersticks to collect blood specimens for laboratory testing across all age groups, including neonates, infants, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
- Assist with laboratory activities within the scope of unlicensed personnel, without performing manual or automated procedures that require measurement, calculation, or interpretation.
- Collaborate with Clinical Laboratory Scientists to ensure laboratory results are critically reviewed, verified, and validated before release.
- Uphold the Mission and Core Values of St. Bernardine Medical Center through professional conduct and reliable specimen collection.
- Participate in quality improvement and process enhancement initiatives in support of the hospital’s strategic plan.
- Collect, prepare, and process patient specimens for diagnostic tests.
