About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant performs and documents routine laboratory specimen processing, specimen procurement, and limited testing. This role involves verifying patient and specimen identification, ensuring equipment functionality, and assisting in training laboratory staff while adhering to CAP regulations. The assistant prioritizes workload to meet turnaround time goals, maintains accurate records, and uses laboratory and hospital systems for various functions. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as is the ability to handle stat specimens and resolve identification issues. The role requires flexibility in assignments, compliance with attendance policies, and a commitment to safety regulations and continuous improvement through participation in performance improvement initiatives and in-service programs.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent accepted.
  • Laboratory instrumentation knowledge.
  • Ability to verify patient and specimen identification with no patient ID errors.
  • Ability to manage a complex task and multitask and prioritize.
  • Ability to produce accuracy on routine and non-routine procedures with no serious errors.
  • Ability to maintain accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to perform equipment maintenance according to schedule.
  • Ability to use the laboratory system for order entry, resulting reports, inquiries, and other necessary functions.
  • Ability to use other hospital applications or job specific applications.
  • Ability to communicate information to other members of the patient care team.
  • Ability to take immediate and appropriate action with specimens marked stat.
  • Ability to identify questionable patient ID information and follow through to resolve the problem.
  • Ability to accept assignment without complaint and follow the chain of command.
  • Ability to comply with hospital attendance policy.
  • Ability to plan breaks and meals considering patient and department needs.
  • Ability to return from breaks and lunch in assigned time frame.
  • Ability to cover for co-workers during breaks.

  • Ability to comply with all safety regulations.
  • Ability to practice principles of safety (proper body mechanics, infection prevention, and emergency code response).

  • Ability to ensure all reagents and chemicals are properly labeled and have HFPA label if indicated.
  • Ability to participate in performance improvement and attend all mandatory in-service programs.
  • Ability to complete annual health service.
  • Ability to submit monthly and annual reports without having to be repeatedly reminded.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates or Bachelor of Science in life sciences or nursing preferred.
  • A mixture of education in life sciences or nursing with experience will be considered.
