About The Position

Ottumwa Regional Health Center is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support laboratory services and patient care. The role includes reviewing provider orders, registering patients when needed, entering laboratory tests, collecting and handling specimens, and following identification, collection, and testing policies. The Laboratory Assistant also coordinates certain collections with nursing staff and performs drug-screen and alcohol-testing collections. The position is scheduled PRN.

Requirements

• High school diploma preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.
• Critical thinking and decisive judgment.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment.
• Ability to learn quickly and navigate multiple software systems.
• Effective English communication skills (reading, writing, and speaking).
• Ability to complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Review provider orders, quick-register patients when needed, and enter appropriate laboratory tests per requisition.
• Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers before all collections.
• Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick; collect urine, throat, and nasal specimens according to policy.
• Label specimens with at least two identifiers, the date and time, and collector initials; ensure specimen integrity and proper handling and transport.
• Perform chain-of-custody urine drug-screen collections and breath alcohol testing according to policy.
• Coordinate therapeutic drug-monitoring collections with nursing to align dose and draw time.
