About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant performs routine laboratory functions accurately and precisely to support laboratory professionals and facilitate production. Duties include specimen handling and preparation, routine equipment maintenance, recordkeeping, quality assurance activities, and compliance with personal protective equipment and laboratory safety requirements. The listed duties are general and are not exhaustive.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to establish work priorities and handle several tasks to maximize workstation efficiency.
Ability to retain information once learned.
Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with coworkers and internal and external customers.

Nice To Haves

Medical assistant training is helpful.
Math and science coursework is preferred.

Responsibilities

Sort and receive specimens in the department.
Perform routine instrument maintenance on some equipment.
Centrifuge specimens, print extra labels, record data such as temperature charts, and store and retrieve specimens.
Prepare reagents and/or media.
Prepare specimens at workstations for testing, including building worklists, aliquoting specimens into sample cups, checking specimens for clots and fibrin, inoculating, and preparing slides.
Perform assigned QA/QC duties and resolve pending lists.
Locate missing samples and decontaminate work areas.
Perform weekly radioactive wipe tests.
Maintain departmental files and records.
Change gas cylinders.
Follow PPE requirements and safety regulations.
Use the laboratory computer system and operate PCs.
Dispose of biohazardous material.
Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
