Hourly Pooled - Laboratory Assistant – Science Initiative CASI Facility
About The Position
Serve as a research assistant in the CASI electron microscopy and X-ray facility by supporting instrument operation and training, and by assisting with routine tasks essential to daily and weekly operations. The Center for Advanced Scientific Instrumentation (CASI) is a staffed core facility housing state-of-the-art instrumentation that supports analysis of a wide variety of specimens. CASI is dedicated to serving University of Wyoming (UW) faculty, students, and other stakeholders throughout Wyoming and beyond, for both research and educational purposes. Located in the Science Initiative Building (SIB), CASI hosts vibration- and light-sensitive instruments—including multiple confocal light microscopes, a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM), and a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system—on the first floor. These rooms are specifically engineered to minimize vibrations and are electromagnetically shielded to ensure high-quality imaging. The CASI facility provides both sample preparation and imaging services to researchers across the university and to external collaborators.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Must be an enrolled UW student in good standing or a graduate with a bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering or biological sciences.
Nice To Haves
- Previous research lab experience in biology, physics, chemistry, engineering or a related field
Responsibilities
- Assist with electron microscopy (EM) and X-ray instrument routine operation and maintenance
- Support daily laboratory operational tasks including inventory and resupply of consumables, liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas
- Completing or assisting with weekly operational, safety and instrument alignment procedures.
