About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant 3 is responsible for urine microscopy, setting up microbiology specimens, assisting in processing specimens from bone marrow, setting up and processing culture specimens as assigned, posting charges, reviewing bills and assisting with inventory as assigned. This role involves receiving specimens, ensuring all samples are present for testing, aliquoting specimens, sorting or sending specimens to departments, processing add-on testing requests, handling mailings, and sending reportable test levels to the State Public Health Department. The position also requires assisting with bone marrow specimen collection and processing, performing urine microscopy, setting up and maintaining microbiology cultures, and handling patient billing tasks. Additionally, the role involves answering phones, contacting patients or physician offices, and adhering to Springfield Clinic policies and procedures, including incident reporting, OSHA training, and customer service philosophy.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required and provide documentation
  • Previous phlebotomy and medical lab experience
  • Ability to multi-task and organize large volumes of work accurately
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to independently research questions
  • Ability to communicate facts and ideas to other laboratories and clinic personnel
  • Ability to handle heavy workloads, competing demands and stress well
  • Must be able to stand 90% of the time for an 8 hour work day
  • Must be able to lift occasional light load of 20 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • After six (6) months of employment should be fully capable of performing job duties accurately and completely.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving specimens
  • Ensuring all samples are present for testing requested
  • Aliquot specimens when needed
  • Sort or send out specimens for each department
  • Process requests for add-on testing
  • Handle Airborne and Federal Express mailings
  • Send out reportable test levels to State Public Health Department
  • Collection of supplies and reagents and paperwork for bone marrow specimens
  • Making smears for bone marrow specimens
  • Determining tubes or media for special testing for bone marrow specimens
  • Assisting physician with bone marrow specimens
  • Using a microscope for urine microscopy
  • Identifying crystals, cellular structures, and correlating biochemical results with microscopy
  • Setting up cultures
  • Maintaining identity accurately for cultures
  • Organizing work for cultures
  • Posting patient charges into the billing program
  • Performing invoice review
  • Requesting credits when necessary
  • Assisting inventory clerk and LIS Coordinator
  • Answering phones
  • Contacting patients or physician offices
  • Complying with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures
  • Adhering to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy
  • Providing excellent customer service and adhering to SC Way customer service philosophy
  • Performing other job duties as assigned
