About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant 3 is responsible for urine microscopy, setting up microbiology specimens, assisting in processing specimens from bone marrow, setting up and processing culture specimens as assigned, posting charges, reviewing bills and assisting with inventory as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required and provide documentation.
  • Previous phlebotomy and medical lab experience.
  • Ability to multi-task and organize large volumes of work accurately.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Ability to independently research questions and communicate facts and ideas to other laboratories and clinic personnel.
  • Ability to handle heavy workloads, competing demands and stress well.
  • Must be able to stand 90% of the time for an 8 hour work day.
  • Must be able to lift occasional light load of 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • After six (6) months of employment should be fully capable of performing job duties accurately and completely.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving specimens, ensuring all samples are present for testing requested, aliquoting specimens when needed, sorting or sending out specimens for each department, processing requests for add-on testing, handling Airborne and Federal Express mailings, and sending out reportable test levels to State Public Health Department.
  • Collecting supplies, reagents, and paperwork for bone marrow specimen collection. Making smears, determining appropriate tubes or media for special testing, and assisting physicians as needed.
  • Using a microscope, demonstrating competency in identifying crystals and cellular structures, and correlating biochemical results with microscopy.
  • Setting up cultures, maintaining identity accurately, and organizing work.
  • Posting patient charges into the billing program, performing invoice review, requesting credits when necessary, and assisting the inventory clerk and LIS Coordinator as needed.
  • Answering phones and contacting patients or physician offices.
  • Complying with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhering to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Providing excellent customer service and adhering to SC Way customer service philosophy.
  • Performing other job duties as assigned.
