About The Position

The Office of University Research and Innovation (OURI) at Tufts University advances research, scholarship, and innovation by providing high-quality services and strategic support. OURI strengthens the University's capacity to secure external funding, fosters innovation and entrepreneurship, and safeguards institutional interests through effective oversight and compliance. The office spans the full research and innovation lifecycle, including grant administration, research development, intellectual property management, and oversight of research involving human participants, animals, and hazardous materials. Tufts Comparative Medicine Services (CMS) provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center. CMS is responsible for ensuring that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program, with centralized facilities housing approximately 25,000 animals daily.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in a research support environment.
  • Knowledge of regulations governing animal research.
  • Demonstrated productivity and effective interpersonal skills.
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day operations of CMS' animal facilities.
  • Maintain equipment such as cagewashers, tunnelwashers, autoclaves, and vacuum systems.
  • Supervise 19-25 animal care staff employees.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies for the Husbandry and Facility Operations section.
  • Make work schedules, evaluate and adjust work assignments.
  • Handle hiring, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Directly supervise animal caretakers.
  • Assist with the development and oversight of the training program for animal care staff.
  • Perform problem-solving related to facility operations.
  • Develop departmental policies and procedures on animal husbandry service operations, including SOPs for animal care, sanitation, facility operation, equipment, and environmental monitoring.
  • Assist in providing emergency coverage for animal facility operation.
  • Perform census and provide data to the business manager.
  • Assist with the execution of disease control and treatment programs as directed by CMS' veterinary staff.
  • Direct husbandry activities.
  • Assist with training to technical and investigative staff.
  • Assist with monitoring compliance to regulations governing the use of animals in research.
