About The Position

Accountable for the delivery of quality nursing service in the labor and delivery, postpartum and newborn nursery areas on a 24-hour basis, according to established standards and practices. Provides administrative management of the obstetric department. The position of Obstetrics Manager is identified as “department safety-sensitive”. Department safety-sensitive positions mean employment positions, which may in the normal course of business: 1.Require the employee to operate the company vehicles or heavy equipment, or 2.Involves duties, which, if performed with inattentiveness, errors in judgment, or diminished coordination, dexterity, or composure, may result in mistakes that could present a real and/or imminent threat to the personal health and safety of the employee, co-worker, and/or the public.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited school of nursing
  • Completion of a bachelor’s in nursing
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing leadership experience required
  • Active Nevada Registered Nurse License
  • Current BLS, ACLS, NRP, STABLE
  • Sufficient previous clinical experience in labor and delivery, postpartum care and newborn nursey and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for medication administration.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Must be a role model of a professional nurse.
  • Ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Able to communicate clearly and tactfully with patients, their families and co-workers

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Nursing or Management preferred or working toward one
  • Minimum 5 years of obstetrical experience preferred
  • Previous Management experience preferred
  • National Certification in a perinatal area or EFM
  • Knowledge of computer application beneficial to work (Word, Excel)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates clinical competency in assigned area of responsibility
  • Assumes primary administrative responsibility of the obstetrics department.
  • Promotes positive team relations by maintaining effective communication
  • Applies leadership qualities in daily activities; uses problem skills effectively.
  • Continually assesses the quality and appropriateness of patient care in the obstetrics department; promotes and supports current evidence-based standards of practice
  • Attends and actively participates in management meetings/committees as scheduled/directed
  • Reviews policies and procedures for department on an annual basis; initiates and recommends development of and revisions of policies to ensure they meet current practices and standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards as applied to area of responsibility
  • Monitors for performance adherence to current policies and procedures and department compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Assesses and documents staff for competency on an ongoing basis; conducts meaningful performance appraisals of employees in an ongoing and timely manner. Ensure staff skills and competency checklists completed annually.
  • Takes appropriate corrective action related to performance incidents; completes and files appropriate documentation.
  • Assists to recruit, select, orient and train staff to meet the needs of the department
  • Arranges for orientation and preceptorship of new staff.
  • Identifies educational needs of staff and initiates action to meet those needs
  • Prepares work schedules and assigns personnel appropriately
  • Responds to patient, family, physician and staff concerns/complaints
  • Researches, evaluates and makes recommendations for capital equipment purchases and is present at board meetings when item is on agenda to be available for questions from the board.
  • Prepares annual budget for the Perinatal area and works to adhere to budget throughout the year.
  • Advises the Chief Nursing Officer of nursing activities, needs, problems, and unusual events
  • Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
  • Maintains harmonious relationships and open line of communication within the unit and with other departments, staff, physicians and other support personnel providing support and assistance to ensure quality patient care.
  • Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and other staff members.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient/resident/staff information
  • Actively participates in the QI process on a unit and house wide basis by gathering and presenting statistics of current PI projects as well as creation and implementation of new PI projects based on the Plan/ Implement/ Evaluate process.
  • Prepare information about the perinatal area for annual review of services report.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
