About The Position

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse works in a facility that is a Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds. The unit includes 9 Labor and Delivery rooms, 2 OB operating rooms, 2 OB post-anesthesia care units, 11 Level II NICU beds, 4 pediatric beds, 20 Mother/Baby beds, an 18-bed START unit for perinatal addiction, and 3 OB Emergency Department beds for patients 20 weeks and above. The START unit is an inpatient voluntary addiction medicine treatment program for pregnant women seeking addiction treatment. The facility handles conditions typically seen in a Level II Perinatal Center for patients 32 weeks and above, hypertension and magnesium administration, medication management for substance abuse, and many low-risk patients requiring intermittent monitoring. Care includes epidurals, fetal monitoring, and IV administration. The facility averages 175–200 deliveries per month. Patient ratios follow AWHONN and NANN guidelines: 1:1 for active labor and 1:2 for non-active laboring patients. The nurse provides labor and delivery care and postpartum care for mothers and babies following the transition period (the first 24 hours), including basic breastfeeding support and couplet care after stabilization. Travelers may float between Labor & Delivery and the Mother/Baby unit only to areas where they are competent; they do not float to the START unit. Department support includes phlebotomy services, surgical technicians Monday through Friday, a NICU attending for infants 34 weeks or less if needed, 24/7 respiratory therapy for high-risk deliveries, 24/7 hospitalist services, 24/7 OB Group and Laborist (OBGYN) coverage, and midwife and family practice group support. The unit uses EPIC Stork and GE Centricity electronic medical records, Alaris IV pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing. Pyxis experience is required. Orientation includes NEO orientation, two shifts focused on patient delivery and C-section triage, annual core competencies (including HIPAA and OSHA), a medication exam, and a unit competency exam.
