As the world’s first pediatric hospital-based birthing facility, it provides immediate access to pediatric specialists. The unit features state-of-the-art facilities, including two operating rooms for cesarean sections and fetal surgeries, 15 LDRP rooms, and two infant stabilization rooms. It is staffed by a skilled, multidisciplinary team of experienced labor and delivery nurses, a 24-hour obstetrician and certified nurse midwife, obstetrical technologists, a backup maternal-fetal medicine physician, and pediatric specialists, ensuring coordinated care for high-risk deliveries. The SDU emphasizes compassionate, individualized care, providing critical emotional and psychological support alongside medical intervention. The Clinical Nurse practices at an advanced beginner to expert level, guided by the CHOP Nursing Professional Practice Model.
