About The Position

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) combines the efforts of industry, civil society organizations, unions, colleges, and universities to promote and protect workers’ rights and improve working conditions globally through adherence to international standards. FLA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Geneva, Switzerland, and Côte d’Ivoire. The FLA seeks a Labor and Civil Society Organization (CSO) Engagement Intern to support the CSO Engagement department and Gender Team for at least 20 hours a week during the summer semester. Reporting to the Director, CSO Engagement, the ideal candidate will conduct mapping of civil society and labor organizations globally, support outreach efforts, and contribute to guidance and learning activities for FLA members on a range of social compliance topics. This is a paid internship with an hourly rate of $15-20/hr depending on college grade level.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with experience or interest in labor rights, human rights, gender equity, social compliance, nonprofit program support and/or engagement with grassroots and community groups.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in mission-driven impact, social responsibility, international law, human rights, and/or social research.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and project management.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and assist implementation of a framework and outreach plan for indexing labor and civil society organizations who are interested in connecting with FLA member companies on labor issues.
  • Assist efforts to support and elevate FLA labor and CSO members such as through written communications and webinars featuring their work.
  • Support planning for a fall convening of labor and civil society organizations focusing on issues such as freedom of association and gender-based violence and harassment in supply chains.
  • Additional duties as assigned (one-off research projects, event planning and logistics support).
