Performs and maintains proficiency in the technical and related work of the Laboratory. Accessioning Time: 5% Reviews requisitions and orders, verifies accuracy of corresponding specimens, documents specimen collection information in LIS, accurately, and updates, as necessary. Performance Expectations: •Reviews all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems. •Checks test requests are appropriate for specimen received and specimen meets all requirements before proceeding with accessioning. •Contacts clinicians for missing information or clarification. •Prioritizes STAT/RUSH samples, per laboratory guidelines. •Follows patient identification practices per laboratory guidelines with 100% accuracy. •Follows all applicable laboratory, departmental and institutional policies and procedures related to billing. Participates in and promotes the prevention, detection and resolution of instances of noncompliance with departmental and institutional billing policies and procedures. •Notifies LT3 or supervisor of any problems that occur during the accessioning process. Technical Procedures Time: 35% Performs technical duties in laboratory sections, with minimal supervision, as assigned. Performance Expectations: •Follows all laboratory procedures documented in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual when performing testing, thoroughly and accurately. •Performs technical procedures according to the required laboratory workflow patterns and in an organized manner so as to facilitate follow-up by other staff. •Consults with supervisor or senior technologist to verify procedure for specimens that do not follow SOPs. Contacts clinician to get additional information. Discusses alternatives with lab management and/or attending. •Verifies patient identification at all steps of every procedure. Maintains complete accuracy. •Performs all mathematical calculations, accurately, when necessary. Management of Information Time: 20% Maintains complete, accurate, legible, neat, organized, up-to-date records/logs/files. Performance Expectations: •Performs analysis and enters test results into LIS, accurately, with minimal supervision. •Always uses unique password when using computers. Logs out of computers after use. •Performs various LIS responsibilities, as assigned. •Always follows Patient Confidentiality guidelines. Releases information only to those who are authorized. Accesses patient information only on a need to know basis. Discards all confidential patient information according to Laboratory Confidentiality Policy. •Follows patient identification practices as detailed in Standard Operating Procedures Manual when calling results to clinicians, entering results into LIS, and transcribing data. •Documents manually and/or electronically, as required. •Maintains complete, accurate, up-to-date, legible, neat, and organized records. •Assures complete and accurate data storage and/or data printouts, when necessary. •Creates neat, accurate, well-formatted documents. •Generates pending log at designated times to assure all tests are performed, when necessary. •Notifies appropriate individuals concerning critical results in a timely manner. Documents appropriately. •Reconciles problems. Quality Control/Quality Assurance Time: 20% Assures the accuracy of all tests performed by adhering to the laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures. Performs routine and advanced equipment maintenance. Performance Expectations: •Performs quality control tests. Records and documents per laboratory guidelines. •Identifies problems and out-of-control values of quality control tests, per laboratory guidelines. Notifies supervisor or lead technologist of discrepancies before reporting results. Records corrective action taken. •Verifies results of tests and discusses aberrant findings with supervisor or lead technologist. •Assures data is internally consistent and meets QC guidelines. •Recognizes normal ranges and routine trends and results that may be problematic. •Evaluates patient results based on previous results and data from other tests performed, when necessary. •Records all problems with samples on QA Corrective Action Log, per laboratory guidelines. •Performs required tests on new reagents, per laboratory guidelines. Records and documents results. •Participates in evaluation and validation of new methodologies/instrumentation. •Operates equipment carefully and according to procedures. Performs necessary equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and quality control on equipment per laboratory guidelines, as assigned. Assures equipment and instruments meet performance standards. Records results. •Helps maintain commonly used equipment. Resolves minor equipment problems. Refers to appropriate procedure manual to determine troubleshooting procedures. Recognizes when additional maintenance is needed and notifies supervisor or senior technologist. Documents corrective action taken. •Participates in laboratory Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance projects, as assigned. •Participates in the Proficiency Testing Program, as assigned. •Assumes responsibility of Quality Control for assigned instrument or project. Care for Environment/Safety Time: 10% Contributes to the upkeep and safety of the laboratory and assures a clean, safe, adequately supplied work area. Maintains adequate inventories of reagents and supplies. Performance Expectations: •Follows all infection control and safety regulations, per laboratory guidelines. •Follows standard precautions for all specimen handling and disposal. •Wears appropriate personal protective equipment. Takes off all dirty personal protective equipment before leaving work area. Follows the dress code guidelines. •Maintains a neat, clean, organized work area. Keeps working supplies at bench and resupplies work area ensuring that sufficient supplies are available and organized when work is complete. •Creates and helps maintain an environment that places emphasis on safety. Works with coworkers and management to correct any condition that has the potential to have a negative impact on laboratory safety. •Achieves New York City Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for Chemical Laboratories, when necessary. •Participates in daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cleaning schedules, as assigned. •Maintains adequate and accurate inventories of reagents and supplies. Follows laboratory guidelines for use of reagents. •Informs supervisor or appropriate technologist when stocks or reagents need to be reordered or prepared. •Prepares reagents, when necessary. •Orders supplies and reagents, when assigned. •Receives supplies and reagents, per laboratory guidelines. •Complies with Employee Health requirements. Training Time: 10% Provides direction, training, and feedback on routine laboratory procedures, as assigned. Performance Expectations: •Explains and demonstrates all required procedures, competencies, and workflow. Assesses trainees’ backgrounds and provides explanations on an appropriate level of detail. •Refers to appropriate resources and procedure manuals. •Manages instruction time effectively. •Assesses each competency performed by trainees and provides specific feedback and additional training, as needed. •Provides feedback to supervisor on trainees’ progress. Makes recommendations to resolve any problems.
