About The Position

The laboratory technician is responsible for general maintenance and organization of the lab. Will also carry out experiments related to NIH grants. The lab technician should be organized, reliable, and able to work independently. This is a grant funded position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field from an accredited educational institution
  • 1-2 years of laboratory experience with molecular and cell biological techniques.
  • Analytical, communication, initiative, technical skills, problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, supervision, adaptability.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
  • Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with C. elegans, gene cloning, microscopy, and PCR is preferred but not required.
  • Degree in study of Genetics, Cell Biology, Development
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • General lab maintenance. Conduct lab chores and coordinate with work study student. Maintain lab inventories, order reagents, contact vendors and sales representatives, prepare and maintain stock solutions, plates, and other consumables. Maintain equipment and coordinate repairs and vendor maintenance.
  • General lab organization. Maintain biohazard SOP, maintain chemical inventory and waste removal, organize lab meeting schedule, maintain lab website, attend all lab meetings, coordinate undergraduate student schedules and training, maintain C. elegans stocks and other reagents
  • Help to purchase new equipment and computers for lab.
  • Positively represent the Maniates lab at departmental seminars, retreats, receptions, and other events.
  • Conduct experiments related to aims outlined in NIH grants, maintain an organized laboratory notebook, intellectually contribute to ongoing projects, help students with maintaining strains while attending conferences and during academic year as needed, generating C. elegans strains and plasmids.
  • Supervises student employees only.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
