About The Position

This Biology Technician role involves preparing tissue and sectioning material for the manufacture of educational slides as assigned by the team supervisor. Performance will be assessed based upon both the quality of the finished slide and the efficiency of slide making. The technician will control microtome and other technical equipment, checking section quality throughout the process and adjusting as necessary. Responsibilities include affixing specimens to glass, staining specimens according to technical criteria for displaying critical structures for teaching, and permanently mounting specimens without introducing air. The role also requires investigating and determining how to solve production or quality problems, collaborating with expeditors and senior technicians to satisfy customer needs, and planning ways to meet production/quality goals. The technician will also interpret specimen structure and quality, determining the plane of section and suitability for teaching biology. Maintaining order and supplies in personal lab space, participating in the recycling program, and maintaining shared equipment are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Science degree required.
  • Knowledge of normal/optimal specimen structure and quality.
  • Knowledge of general lab procedures including staining.
  • Ability to analyze a problem to isolate the source of difficulty and fix it.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize time.
  • Ability to follow multi-step procedures accurately.
  • High level of motor skill, manual dexterity, and patience.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing.
  • Familiarity with Windows 98 and 2000.
  • Customer service abilities including friendliness, a positive attitude, and phone etiquette.
