About The Position

The Lab Supervisor is responsible for microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen grossing; maintains laboratory and equipment. This is a Full Time position, 30+ hours per week, located in our NY Pathology Lab. Availability is required Monday through Friday within operating hours of 1:00pm - 9:30pm, with flexibility to help cover in a team environment. The Lab Supervisor will lead and direct other employees in the Laboratory, facilitate team processes by working in collaboration with team members to ensure task priorities, goals, and achievements are completed, and coordinate with management. This role is responsible for all aspects of operation in the histology area, including preparation and maintenance of records, reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, and compliance. The position requires the skills and techniques to prepare tissue for microscopic examination to establish and confirm patient diagnosis, including grossing and fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. Tasks require attention to detail, advanced computer skills, mechanical ability, and knowledge of biology, immunology, anatomy, and chemistry. The supervisor will be responsible for planning the day-to-day workload by setting the work pace, coordinating work assignments, identifying and solving problems, and defining appropriate completion times. They will distribute and balance workloads and tasks among employees, making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishments of assigned team tasks and ensuring that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product. Responsibilities include filing blocks, slides, and requisitions; accessioning and typing; supply inventory management; scheduling coverage for subsections within the work unit; supervising and communicating with shifts; handling customer service 24/7; traveling to other locations/offices for lab-related work as required; creating and maintaining policies and procedures; supervising all customer service in the laboratory; coordinating with the laboratory courier service and resolving issues; troubleshooting IT, IT interface, and equipment; and coordinating with reference laboratories and troubleshooting issues. Other duties may be assigned by leadership and business needs.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience required.
  • Knowledge of programming and operation of general laboratory and automated JHC
  • Research skills.
  • Interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Ability to operate personal computer.
  • Ability to approach problems/decisions analytically.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to use microscope/cryostat, tissue processors, and stainers.
  • Ability/willingness to adhere to the established departmental service standards.
  • NYS pathology lab and Mohs clinic providers and staff positions are mandated W-2 employment status positions as required by applicable laws and regulations.

  • From time to time, operational business needs (e.g. training sessions, emergency coverage issues, etc.) may require employee travel to alternate locations within a reasonable distance based upon GM or RM discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for scheduling coverage for subsections within the work unit, adjusting their schedule in lieu of techs on day and annual leave as needed.
  • Responsible for supervising and communicating with shifts and handling customer service at any time – 24/7 (even if not physically in the laboratory).
  • Traveling to other locations/offices for lab related work as required.
  • Creating and maintaining policies and procedures if any changes are required
  • Responsible for supervising all customer service in the laboratory.
  • Responsible for coordinating with the laboratory courier service and resolving any issues or emergencies that arise with specimen pick-ups.
  • Troubleshooting IT, IT interface and equipment.
  • Responsible for coordinating with reference laboratories and troubleshooting issues.
  • Accessioning, typing, specimen send outs and TC component send outs.
  • Performing Grossing, Embedding, Microtomy and Staining
  • Accurate and timely preparation and staining of histology specimen.
  • Using standard aseptic procedure and safeguards.
  • IHC and Special Stains
  • Controlling contaminated specimen
  • Preparing slides
  • Controlling waste management
  • Ensuring equipment is operated and maintained according to manufacturer’s guidelines and ensuring supplies are adequate for the work to be performed.
  • Maintaining accurate records for quality control, quality assurance and patient data.
  • EMR-LIS related integration and solving troubleshooting.
  • Assist office level customer service for pathology related issues.
  • Following OSHA, HIPAA and CLIA guidelines.
