About The Position

This position is responsible for receiving and relaying telephone and fax information accurately, timely, and professionally. The role involves returning telephone and fax inquiries, contacting practice representatives about specimen/lab order issues for prompt resolution and follow-up, and assisting with other laboratory clerical duties. The Lab Service Rep must identify tests offered by the lab and those tested by reference labs, properly identify insurances and tests for distribution to participating labs, and identify practice locations and physicians. They must also identify and communicate order problems to practices/physicians for resolution. Computer functions such as label reprint, report reprint, demographics, correction, and add/delete test are required, along with data entry. The role requires professional behavior and appearance at all times. This document is not exhaustive, and employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory terminology and protocols (required)
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.​

Responsibilities

  • Receives and relays telephone and fax information in an accurate, timely and professional manner.
  • Returns telephone and fax inquiries in an accurate, timely and professional manner.
  • Contacts practice representatives with problems encountered with specimens/lab orders for a quick resolution and follow-up.
  • Assists with other laboratory clerical duties.
  • Identifies tests offered by the lab and those tested by a participating reference lab.
  • Properly identifies insurances and the tests that are to be distributed to participating labs.
  • Identifies practice locations and the physicians at those locations.
  • Properly identifies order problems and communicates with practices/physicians quickly for follow-up and resolution.
  • Performs computer functions (i.e. label reprint, report reprint, demographics, correction, add/delete test) as required in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform data entry functions as needed.
  • Behaves in a professional manner at all times.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times.
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with established policies and procedures (includes OSHA-Blood borne Pathogen Standard, OSHA-Hazardous Chemical Communication Standard, and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act).
  • Assures a clean and safe business office, including treatment rooms, kitchen and restroom.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of work related information.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
