Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Microbiology required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Healthcare Informatics is acceptable when combined with documented hands-on build or support experience in the MEDITECH Expanse Laboratory module.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience or laboratory information system support experience required.
  • Experience with the MEDITECH family of electronic health records required; MEDITECH Expanse Laboratory module experience strongly preferred and will be weighted heavily in candidate selection.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with laboratory interfaces, HL7 messaging, middleware, and analyzer connectivity preferred.
  • Knowledge of SQL, report writing tools, or database management preferred.
  • New York State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Technician required for candidates who will perform patient testing and maintain bench competency.
  • ASCP certification (MLS, MT, or MLT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and optimize the laboratory modules of MEDITECH Expanse, including test dictionaries, order sets, reference ranges, calculations, result reporting formats, specimen workflows, and user access.
  • Build, validate, and document new tests, test changes, reflex rules, and mapping structures before release to production; maintain a validation record for each change.
  • Coordinate dictionary and test changes with Acute, Ambulatory, Billing Support, and reference laboratories, and with health information exchange and practice partners such as HIXNY and MEDENT.
  • Design, validate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory interfaces with the EHR, analyzers, middleware, and reference laboratories, including HL7 message flow and instrument connectivity.
  • Perform initial and regression testing for MEDITECH Expanse updates, patches, and upgrades; document results and report defects to Information Services and the vendor.
  • Monitor and resolve charge rejections, missing charges, and billing edits; update CPT and IMO code changes and communicate revenue impact to laboratory leadership.
  • Monitor and resolve pending test, reflex test, and exception logs for reference laboratory testing, and maintain written daily procedures for reference laboratory staff.
  • Monitor and resolve failures in result delivery systems, including auto-fax, print, and portal routing, to protect turnaround time.
  • Perform system validation and testing for new instruments, assays, software releases, and workflow changes prior to go-live.
  • Develop, maintain, and test LIS downtime and recovery procedures; support the laboratory during planned and unplanned downtime events.
  • Support user access auditing, role-based security, and HIPAA safeguards for laboratory information, and escalate data integrity or security concerns.
  • Coordinate with vendors on issue resolution, service tickets, maintenance windows, and system enhancements.
  • Write and maintain reports and data extracts supporting quality initiatives, regulatory submissions, productivity, and turnaround time monitoring.
  • Assist with CAP, CLIA, New York State Department of Health, and other accreditation activities, including inspection readiness and evidence of system validation.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, work aids, and training materials for LIS functions; train and support laboratory staff and end users.
  • Represent the laboratory at information technology meetings and project work and communicate decisions and system changes back to laboratory staff.
  • Maintain clinical competency in one department within the laboratory service when licensure permits.
  • Use safe, accurate, and professional methods at all times, observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and laboratory policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in on-call and after-hours support for critical laboratory system issues, upgrades, and go-live events.
  • Serve as a resource to laboratory staff for department-specific projects and issues.
  • Participate in laboratory quality improvement initiatives and special projects.
  • Travel to St. Mary’s Healthcare laboratory sites as operationally necessary.
