About The Position

This position is situated in the Department of Civil Engineering at McGill University, specifically within the Jamieson Structures Lab on the downtown campus. The role involves assisting lab members with various experiments related to masonry specimens, including preparation, conducting freezing/thawing experiments, performing non-destructive tests, characterizing mechanical properties, and assisting with out-of-plane experiments on unreinforced masonry walls. The successful candidate will also be responsible for collecting and uploading experimental data, writing technical reports, and reporting progress to supervisors. Technical and safety training will be provided by expert technicians.

Requirements

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Familiarity with MS Office and/or MATLAB and/or Octave
  • Good working knowledge of online databases
  • High School Diploma
  • 1 Year Related Experience
  • Being currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with masonry and testing in a laboratory
  • Previous experience on construction sites is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Preparing masonry specimens for freezing/thawing experiments
  • Conducting freezing/thawing experiments on masonry specimens
  • Performing non-destructive tests on weathered masonry units
  • Conducting experiments to characterize the mechanical properties of masonry materials
  • Preparing, casting, and demolding mortar specimens
  • Assisting struct-lab members in performing out-of-plane experiments on unreinforced masonry walls with and without retrofitting panels
  • Collecting experimental data and uploading it to struct-lab databases (e.g., SharePoint)
  • Writing technical reports/memoranda detailing the methodology used in the experiments conducted at the laboratory and data analysis and summarizing progress
  • Reporting progress of ongoing experiments to immediate supervisors
  • Being able to frequently move heavy equipment up to 50lbs
