About The Position

The Red Shield and Eliza Shirley House are safe and welcoming emergency housing programs offering respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental services to empower residents to strive towards self-sufficiency. The goal of the these programs is to support individuals experiencing homelessness address immediate barriers to self sufficiency, identify and access longer term housing support, and resolve their immediate housing crisis. All populations experiencing homelessness, including single men and women, couples, and families with children are accepted.

Requirements

  • Must have a food safety certification recognized by the National Restaurant Association within 90 days of hire.
  • Must have H.S. diploma / GED.
  • Must be able to safely use knives, mechanical slicer, and other basic kitchen utensils and appliances.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • As a Mandated Reporter, must provide proof of having completed training on recognizing and reporting child abuse meeting the training standards of PA Act 153 of 2014 by the end of orientation with recurrent training required every five years thereafter.
  • Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check.
  • Must have an understanding of and support for the Mission of The Salvation Army.

Responsibilities

  • Execution of meals according to the menus established by the Kitchen Supervisor in a family shelter setting.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in the clean-up of the kitchen and dining area after each meal serving.
  • Mop, remove trash, counter cleaning, and dish washing.
  • Participate in the routine unloading of delivery trucks and storing of food.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all storage areas.
  • Uphold safety and cleanliness of the kitchen.
  • Work closely with co-workers and residents residing in shelter.
