About The Position

The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting in the preparation and serving of meals to shelter guests and the public. This role involves picking up food donations, preparing food items, setting up and cleaning the dining room, cleaning kitchen equipment, and washing dishes. The position also includes sweeping and mopping floors, maintaining inventory, and potentially cross-training as a shelter monitor. Adherence to health regulations and maintaining a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining areas are crucial.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of experience working in a kitchen OR any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Food Handler's License or ability to obtain one.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to carry and load pans of food, up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, lifting, standing, and climbing.

Responsibilities

  • Picks up food donations from local businesses using a Salvation Army vehicle and stores them appropriately.
  • Prepares and serves food items to shelter guests and the public, ensuring appropriate proportions.
  • Assists in serving meals, including snacks, salads, beverages, and desserts.
  • Washes and chops fruits and vegetables; prepares beverages.
  • Serves meals, ensuring appropriate portions and preparing plates for those requiring additional assistance.
  • Performs all kitchen work in accordance with health regulations related to food preparation, serving, and storage.
  • Maintains orderly freezer and walk-in storage units, cleaning and defrosting as needed.
  • Stores, refrigerates, and freezes foods safely and economically, monitoring expiration dates and ensuring proper disposal of expired food.
  • Washes, dries, and stores pots, pans, plates, glasses, cups, bowls, and utensils.
  • Gathers and prepares items for return to their origin, ensuring they are properly washed.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, floors, dishes, utensils, kitchen appliances, and condiment holders.
  • Sweeps and mops kitchen and dining room floors daily.
  • Cleans refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, coffee makers, stoves, and ovens.
  • Stocks food, beverages, and supplies in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Empties trash cans and ensures they are cleaned daily.
  • Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room.
  • Ensures all meals are prepared in a safe manner.
  • Ensures all kitchen personnel and volunteers practice proper personal hygiene.
  • Monitors the work of volunteers in the kitchen.
  • Ensures compliance with health regulations.
  • Creates monthly menu plans.
  • Maintains inventory at acceptable levels, prepares purchase orders, and submits them to the supervisor for approval.
  • Cross-trains to serve as a shelter monitor as needed.
  • Performs other related work as required.
