About The Position

The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting in the preparation and serving of meals at the Norman Shelter. This role involves picking up food donations, preparing food items, setting up and cleaning the dining room, and maintaining kitchen cleanliness. The position also includes inventory management, menu planning, and potentially cross-training as a shelter monitor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of experience working in a kitchen OR any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Food Handlers License or ability to obtain one.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to carry and load pans of food, up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, lifting, standing, and climbing.

Responsibilities

  • Picks up food donations from local businesses using a Salvation Army vehicle and stores them appropriately.
  • Prepares and serves food items to shelter guests and the public, ensuring correct proportions and adherence to acceptable cooking methods.
  • Assists in serving meals, including snacks, salads, beverages, and desserts.
  • Prepares plates for individuals requiring additional assistance.
  • Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room, adhering to health regulations for food preparation, serving, and storage.
  • Washes, dries, and stores kitchenware and utensils.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, floors, kitchen appliances, and condiment holders.
  • Sweeps and mops kitchen and dining room floors daily.
  • Cleans refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, coffee makers, stoves, and ovens.
  • Stocks food, beverages, and supplies in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Empties and cleans trash cans daily.
  • Ensures all meals are prepared safely and that kitchen personnel and volunteers practice proper hygiene.
  • Monitors the work of volunteers in the kitchen and ensures compliance with health regulations.
  • Creates monthly menu plans.
  • Maintains inventory at acceptable levels and prepares purchase orders for supervisor approval.
  • Cross-trains to serve as a shelter monitor as needed.
  • Performs other related work as required.
