About The Position

The K-CET GED Instructor contributes to the success of Klamath Community College’s Adult Basic Education Program by providing quality instruction to improve students’ basic skills, preparing students to earn a GED® credential, and preparing students to transition to post-secondary education, workforce training, or improved employment. The GED Instructor is responsible for teaching multi-level adult learners in HyFlex and online classrooms in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematical content, utilizing a curriculum aligned to the Oregon Adult College and Career Readiness Standards. In addition, the Instructor will support student retention through academic goal planning, advising, and outreach efforts and is responsible for tracking and reporting data that pertains to student and program success.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, disability, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching adult students is preferred.
  • Individuals should preferably possess knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult language learners.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy.
  • Classroom management and lesson adaptability.

Nice To Haves

  • K-12 teaching experience; or experience in adult basic education classrooms.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement instructional activities for a cohort of adult learners preparing for a GED® certificate; ability to teach GED® subjects.
  • Prepare syllabi reflecting GED® learning objectives; align curriculum and instructional strategies with Title II programming needs, CASAS competencies, and approved Oregon Adult Basic Skills Standards.
  • Instruct basic skills classes and direct study in an individualized learning lab setting using instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and the subject (e.g., group discussion, online, technology-enhanced delivery, computers).
  • Design / deliver supplemental teaching materials to meet the needs of a broad range of learning abilities.
  • Cultivate a variety of teaching styles to provide quality learning experiences for diverse student needs.
  • Assist students with learning difficulties and various learning needs.
  • Become familiar with center resources, materials, and equipment and recommend appropriate course materials for individual students.
  • Use Title II data and analysis to inform instruction and improve programming.
  • Evaluate and assess student academic achievement and demonstrate modification of teaching techniques in accordance with assessment feedback.
  • Maintain an encouraging and supportive atmosphere.
  • Communicate well with a diverse student population, including English Language Learners.
  • Maintain accurate student performance and attendance records.
  • Recommend student success strategies (e.g., tutoring, counseling, and other support services).
  • Perform activities related to student retention, success, and persistence.
  • Develop a timeline and weekly instructional schedule for learner persistence.
  • Participate in student outreach and success strategies.
  • Participate as a team member to collaborate and support student success.
  • Attend local/state/regional training according to Title II and department professional development plans as recommended by the director.
  • Attend staff meetings and maintain timely responses to department and college-wide correspondence through e-mail.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in English (written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and strong interpersonal skills).
  • If assigned, this position may require administrative work on grant-funded program activities and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
