About The Position

JV Hockey Coach position at an academic institution. This role involves instructing and coaching students in the fundamentals of hockey, demonstrating techniques, and evaluating athletes' strengths and weaknesses to improve their performance and prepare them for competition. The coach will plan and conduct practice sessions, provide training direction, and stay updated on the sport's evolving rules, techniques, and philosophies. The position requires a strong understanding of sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles, with the ability to adjust coaching methods based on athlete capabilities. The coach will also be responsible for evaluating skills and performance records to determine athlete fitness and potential. This is a seasonal, part-time, salaried position for the Winter Sport Season.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Has played sport in high school or college or has reached a level of expertise in the sport as an adult through participation coaching or through a formal coaching development program.
  • Possess excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students by building trust and credibility.
  • Respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to engage positively with students, employees, and guests.
  • Self-motivated and independent.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including extended hours, weekends, and evenings.
  • A strict adherence to confidential policies is required.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  • Clean driving record (reviewed annually).

Nice To Haves

  • College degree preferred.
  • Experience in an academic institution preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
  • Provide training direction, encouragement, and motivation to prepare athletes for games, competitive events, and/or tours.
  • Keep abreast of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to their sport.
  • Adjust coaching techniques based on the strengths and weaknesses of athletes.
  • Instruct individuals or groups in sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles.
  • Evaluate athletes' skills and review performance records to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of athletics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
