About The Position

Maintains care, custody, and control of juveniles in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center facility. Participates in the planning of programs and objectives for their work group. This role requires a flexible schedule, working approximately 24 hours per week, with on-call availability 24 hours a day, subject to irregular work hours. The officer is responsible for providing a safe living environment, transporting residents, leading physical education and recreational activities, and physically restraining residents when necessary. A significant part of the role involves maintaining certifications through ongoing training, completing necessary paperwork, assisting in orientating new officers, managing students in class, and preparing/cleaning for meals. The position also includes ensuring facility cleanliness, overseeing resident chores, abiding by ethical codes, and maintaining the security and confidentiality of case information.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age, or older.
  • Must be able to meet criteria for certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer through TJJD.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge and competence.
  • Must have the physical ability to perform physical restraint techniques.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage (Driver’s license requirements must be met within 30 days if employee recently moved from another state).
  • Must be able to meet all criteria for certification as a juvenile supervision officer through TJJD.
  • Must provide written proof (on employer’s letterhead) of required work experience from previous employer if applicable (which should include dates of employment and description of job duties and performance).
  • Non-disqualifying criminal history/sex offender registration background check.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of working experience with youth-oriented services or programs is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience performing duties satisfactorily.
  • An understanding of human behavioral patterns and the ability to apply good judgment in dealing with troubled youth and their families.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains care, custody, and control of residents in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provides a safe living environment for residents.
  • Transports residents within and outside the facility as needed.
  • Provides physical education and recreational activities and supervises those activities of residents in accordance with procedures.
  • Physically and mechanically restrains juvenile residents when needed.
  • Obtains 80 hours of approved training bi-annually and maintains own training and certification status.
  • Completes necessary paperwork.
  • Assists in orientating newly employed officers and relief officers in all phases of detention duties.
  • Manages students in class.
  • Prepares and/or sets up meals and cleans the kitchen as needed.
  • Completes meal records and evaluations.
  • Provides clean linens weekly and clean clothes daily.
  • Launders clothes and linens.
  • Conducts door and perimeter checks, ensures key control, conducts accurate security count of utensils at meal times, monitors residents in their rooms by audio and visual checks in person, conducts room searches, performs pat-down and strip searches, and searches incoming residents for items not permitted.
  • Conducts intake and orients all new residents.
  • Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of the facility.
  • Assigns, prepares for, and oversees resident chores.
  • Abides by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department Code of Ethics.
  • Maintains security and confidentiality of all case information, files, and chronos as required by the Texas Family Code.
