About The Position

The Juvenile Corrections Officer role involves providing safe and secure supervision and care to youth in a secure juvenile detention setting. Officers serve as role models, mentors, and guides, working as part of a team to support positive and healthy youth development. Key responsibilities include managing conflict and youth behavior safely, utilizing de-escalation and physical intervention techniques when necessary, providing structure, and engaging youth in pro-social activities. The position also supports youth in developing new social, academic, and vocational skills and interests, and includes valuable training on building healthy relationships with youth and crisis prevention and management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or at least 1 year of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience in direct provision of care to children.
  • Physically participate in and successfully complete all required in-service training, including, but not limited to, CPR, First Aid, Response to Resistance techniques, etc.
  • Must be age 21 or older.
  • Must pass background screening process.
  • Maturity to encourage youth to better themselves and have healthy interactions in this unique environment.
  • Ability to organize Unit activities according to established priorities.
  • Ability to use crisis intervention counseling skills to resolve situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of residents' healthcare issues.
  • Interpersonal skills requiring judgment and tact to communicate effectively with residents who are engaged in acting out behavior.
  • Ability to work as a team with coworkers.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of work experience working with delinquent youth in the supervision of activities.
  • Possession of valid driver's license and auto liability insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Role model healthy and respectful interpersonal interactions.
  • Encourage and provide a safe and secure environment for residents by fostering community and utilizing active behavior management.
  • Monitor residents assuring safety and well-being consistent with assessed risk level.
  • Help create and maintain strong morale and a feeling of belonging in his/her team.
  • Educate youth on how to maintain the unit and living areas in clean and orderly fashion by teaching skills and supervising residents on work details and recreation activities in the pod and in the gym.
  • Escort new admissions around the unit and advise residents of their room assignments and responsibilities.
  • Refer residents for Psychology evaluations and handle residents' daily medical requests in a confidential manner.
  • Counsel for crisis intervention on individual or group basis.
  • Provide verbal and written assessment of residents' behavior.
  • Physically participate in training and use approved physical intervention techniques such as blocks for personal protection, body hold techniques, arm hold techniques, and take downs, when necessary.
  • Be active and ambulatory to respond to need for supervision, monitoring and behavior management.
  • Observe, identify and monitor closely unusual or escalating behavior patterns.
  • Provide auditory and visual monitoring of youth in assigned rooms.
