Laminar is building human-centric self-driving factories for the manufacturing industry, utilizing proprietary inline sensors, physics and chemistry-grounded foundation models, and real-time process control software. The team in Somerville is a diverse group of 50 professionals, including hardware and software engineers, chemists, AI researchers, and go-to-market specialists, all working collaboratively with a high degree of autonomy and ownership. They are seeking a driven Software Engineer for their Edge Platform to develop the software infrastructure for their edge computing platform. This role involves working closely with a Senior Edge Platform Engineer to develop Linux-based software, automate system setup, and enhance application deployment and management on edge devices and factory servers. The ideal candidate is curious, takes initiative, and is committed to solving problems.

Good hands-on Linux experience, including command line, permissions, processes, services, package management, and logs.
Experience programming in a language such as Python, Rust, C++, or Go, and familiarity with shell scripting.
Understanding of networking fundamentals, including IP addressing, DNS, ports, and TCP/IP.
Familiarity with Git and a methodical approach to testing and debugging.
Academic, personal, internship, or professional projects demonstrating ability to build and troubleshoot working systems.
Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Docker, virtual machines, systemd, or a personal Linux server.
Interest in running ML models locally.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain Linux services, scripts, and tools supporting the edge platform.
Automate the setup and configuration of edge computers and factory-deployed servers.
Support packaging, testing, and deployment of applications using containers and virtual machines.
Implement and test integrations for industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, Profinet, OPC UA, CC-Link, EtherNet/IP).
Contribute to software updates, logging, monitoring, and recovery capabilities for deployed systems.
Investigate service failures, networking issues, and resource usage, and develop tests to improve reliability.
Support the integration and testing of ML inference workloads on edge hardware.
Collaborate with the senior engineer and broader engineering team to deliver features and resolve platform issues.
Maintain clear setup instructions, technical documentation, and troubleshooting guides.
