About The Position

This position requires an active Public Trust clearance or the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance to be considered. A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens. You must provide documentation that you are a U.S. citizen to qualify. The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) is seeking a Junior Epidemiologist to join the Epidemiology and Analysis (E&A) branch. This position is responsible for conducting systematic health surveillance and data analysis to support the health and readiness of the Department of War (DoW) personnel. You will work within a professional team of scientists and analysts to provide objective, data-driven insights that inform public health policy and force protection strategies.

Requirements

  • Master of Public Health (MPH) in epidemiology or a related public health discipline.
  • 1-3 years of relevant public health experience, with a strong preference for roles involving quantitative data analysis.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SAS for data management and statistical analysis is required.
  • Exceptional analytical, scientific writing, and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • A collaborative mindset with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
  • Proven ability to maintain strong client relationships.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with Department of Defense (DoD) medical/health databases (e.g., DMSS, MHS GENESIS, ESSENCE).
  • Familiarity with the Military Health System (MHS) and previous experience in a federal government or contracting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize SAS to perform descriptive and inferential analyses on vast health datasets, including the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS), to identify and monitor long-term trends in diseases, injuries, and overall health outcomes across the force.
  • Support the standardization of the Tri-Service Reportable Medical Events (RME) system by developing, refining, and promoting standard case definitions and data reporting processes.
  • Serve as an epidemiological resource for the Army, Navy, and Air Force public health communities.
  • Provide expert consultation and foster inter-service collaboration to standardize and enhance joint health surveillance initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of data-driven reports, presentations, and publications, including the AFHSD’s flagship, peer-reviewed journal, the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR).
  • Provide analytical support and subject matter expertise to the E&A Branch Chief and AFHSD leadership to inform strategic decision-making and health policy.
  • Represent the E&A branch in technical working groups and inter-service committees
  • Serve as a point of contact for routine data inquiries from external partners.
  • Regularly attend and contribute to recurring branch, division, and DoW-wide public health meetings.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
