Junior Electrical Design Engineer

Standex•Rockledge, FL

About The Position

Standex Electronics is seeking a Junior Electrical Design Engineer to create design specifications for electromechanical components. The work primarily involves magnetic field mapping and analysis, electromagnetic system modeling, and applying magnetic principles to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The engineer works with internal and external customers to establish design specifications and maintain customer engineering relationships, and prepares proposals, prototypes, test plans, and reports to deliver products that meet specifications. The role supports product design from concept through production, as well as ongoing design support after launch. A junior engineer may work under the supervision of an engineer or senior engineer, starting with simpler responsibilities and progressing to more complex work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Electrical Engineering program accredited by ABET is preferred; direct experience and qualifications may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering program.
  • At least 1 year of engineering experience, including co-op rotations.
  • Knowledge of coil, transformer, and inductor design.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability.
  • Understanding of 2D/3D modeling software, finite element analysis, and simulation software.
  • Ability to read, create, and critique detailed technical wiring diagrams, schematics, and bills of materials.
  • Understanding of statistical methods and tools.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple work efforts to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and a process-oriented mindset.
  • Strong analytical work methodology and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  • May require supervision by an engineer or senior engineer while performing tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Electrical Engineering program accredited by ABET.
  • Ability to promote and develop subordinate self-management skills, including accountability, self-motivation, and time management.

Responsibilities

  • Create concepts and develop new mechanical and electrical component designs.
  • Translate customer specifications into cost-efficient, manufacturable assemblies.
  • Provide ongoing design support for existing products after launch and adapt existing designs to new customer requirements and applications.
  • Generate costing information for internally designed and customer-designed solutions.
  • Coordinate prototyping with internal and external partners and communicate risks or delays affecting customer prototypes.
  • Establish test requirements and assist with testing prototypes to verify product conformance to specifications.
  • Create and process ECNs/ECOs to keep released documentation controlled and accurate.
  • Review and prepare drawings, establish product standards and specifications, and ensure documentation accuracy.
  • Review designs for accuracy, feasibility, economics, and conformance to engineering best practices.
  • Perform reverse engineering to determine product specifications and materials.
  • Review, understand, and support customer program requirements for existing and new designs.
  • Work with customers to establish performance and cost targets and launch new products or changes to existing products while maintaining customer engineering relationships.
  • Apply industry standards and organizational policies and procedures, and design to meet agency requirements; work with third-party testing agencies to achieve compliance.
  • Coordinate across functions to relay and document information for smooth product releases to production.
  • Provide internal and external customers with technical information, engineering recommendations, action plans, and risk identification and evaluation.
  • Assist commercial and technical personnel with program feasibility assessments and proposals.
  • Support development and implementation of engineering best practices, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Support lean practices, including weekly SIOP, Daily Visual Management, A3 Problem Solving, and Kaizen.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
