Junior Electrical Design Engineer

Standex•Rockledge, FL

About The Position

Standex Electronics is seeking a Junior Electrical Design Engineer to create design specifications for electromechanical components. The work primarily involves designs requiring magnetic field mapping and analysis, electromagnetic system modeling, and applying magnetic principles to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The engineer works with internal and external customers to establish design specifications and maintain customer engineering relationships, and completes proposals, prototypes, test plans, and reports to deliver products that meet specifications. The role supports product design from concept through production, as well as ongoing design support after launch. A junior engineer may work under the supervision of an engineer or senior engineer, starting with simpler responsibilities and advancing to more complex work.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of engineering experience, including co-op rotations.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in an ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering program is preferred; direct experience and qualifications may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering program.
  • Ability to perform tasks under the supervision of an engineer or senior engineer as appropriate, with responsibilities progressing from simpler to more complex work.
  • Knowledge of coil, transformer, and inductor design.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability.
  • Understanding of 2D/3D modeling software, finite element analysis, and simulation software.
  • Ability to read, create, and critique detailed technical wiring diagrams, schematics, and bills of materials.
  • Understanding of statistical methods and tools.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple work efforts to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to promote and develop subordinate self-management skills, including accountability, self-motivation, and time management.
  • Strong organizational skills and a process-oriented mindset.
  • Strong analytical work methodology and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Electrical Engineering program accredited by ABET.

Responsibilities

  • Create concepts and develop new mechanical and electrical component designs.
  • Translate customer specifications into cost-efficient, manufacturable assemblies.
  • Provide post-launch design support to sustain existing designs.
  • Adapt existing designs to meet new customer requirements and applications.
  • Generate costing information for internally designed and customer-designed solutions.
  • Coordinate prototyping with internal and external partners to meet customer expectations.
  • Communicate risks or delays affecting customer prototype completion.
  • Establish test requirements and assist with prototype testing to verify products and conformance to specifications.
  • Create and process ECNs/ECOs to ensure documentation is released, controlled, and accurate.
  • Review and prepare drawings, establish product standards and specifications, and ensure documentation accuracy.
  • Review designs for accuracy, feasibility, economics, and conformance to engineering best practices.
  • Conduct reverse-engineering activities to determine product specifications and materials.
  • Review, understand, and support customer program requirements for existing and new designs.
  • Work with customers to establish performance and cost targets and launch new products or changes to existing products while maintaining customer engineering relationships.
  • Apply industry standards and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Design to meet agency requirements and work with third-party testing agencies to achieve compliance.
  • Coordinate across functions to ensure information is relayed and documented for smooth release of new products to production.
  • Provide internal and external customers with technical information, engineering recommendations, action plans, and risk identification and evaluation.
  • Assist commercial and technical personnel with program feasibility assessments and proposals.
  • Support the development and implementation of engineering best practices, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Support lean methodologies, including weekly SIOP, Daily Visual Management, A3 Problem Solving, and Kaizen.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
