About The Position

Astrion has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer located at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. The electrical engineer is responsible for the design, analyses, integration, test, and management of the electrical subsystem of spacecraft, payloads, instruments, and technology demonstrators. The electrical subsystem includes the power generation, power distribution, avionics, grounding, isolation, data signals, inhibits and electrical safety.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar technical area
  • At least 1-3 years of related experience in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or relevant technical field
  • Detailed understanding of electrical engineering, avionics, power generation/distribution, EEE parts, and harnessing as applied to space environments
  • NASA or industry spaceflight experience
  • Detail knowledge and experience with Altium for electrical designs and layout
  • Demonstrated skillset with reading, evaluating, and reviewing electrical schematics and drawings
  • Experience with electrical verification and validation including electrical testing, pinout checks, safe to mates, and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS)
  • Must be flexible in adapting to deadlines, changing schedules, competing priorities, and unpredictable events
  • Thorough, detail oriented, and organized, with excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Familiar with and able to present data and recommendations to a diverse audience of project managers, scientists, engineers and technical staff
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills
  • Ideal candidate has demonstrated ability to assign work and manage personnel and tasks
  • Self-motivated and independent thinker
  • Ability to pass a Federal Background Check

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and experience with NASA standards and best practices as they relate to Electrical Design and EEE parts a desire
  • Understanding of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) / Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) a benefit
  • Experience with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) a bonus
  • Working knowledge of Atlassian tools Confluence and Jira beneficial
  • Exceptional customer relationship management highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the design, analyses, integration, test, and management of the electrical subsystem of spacecraft, payloads, instruments, and technology demonstrations
  • System architecture definition and decomposition into electrical block diagrams and designs
  • Design the electrical subsystem including power generation, power distribution, avionics, grounding, isolation, data signals, inhibits, and electrical safety
  • Define the work products, tasks, parts, components, and electrical system architecture in support of the project concept of operations and requirements
  • Design activities include power budgets, circuit design, printed circuit board layout, parts selection, harnessing, analyses, and Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
  • Creating, reading, evaluating, updating, and reviewing electrical schematics and drawings
  • Working with other subsystem engineers (mechanical, thermal, C&DH, ADCS/GNC, communications, propulsion, software) to optimize design form, fit, function, and performance of the electrical subsystem
  • Derating EEE parts for the spaceflight environment
  • Evaluation of EEE parts for radiation environments including Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE)
  • Create, define, document, control, and verify electrical interfaces for subsystems, payloads, and technologies
  • Coordination with fabrication for PCB production and parts placement to NASA standards and best practices
  • Define, write test procedures, and perform electrical subsystem tests to validate and verify the system design
  • Responsible for monthly, annual ,and milestone review electrical products and reports
  • Identify, communicate, and deconflict tasks, deliverables, and schedule impacts
  • Working with the project managers, systems engineers, and technical staff to forecast, track performance, and provide insights
  • Interface with Government, contractors and mission partner staff for electrical design and interfaces
  • Some travel may be required to support mission and project partners
