About The Position

Impacto Media is seeking a bilingual Junior Editor to support editorial production across its print and digital publications. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Junior Editor works closely with other editors and reporters to produce accurate, inclusive, and impactful coverage in English and Spanish. This highly collaborative role helps keep the editorial process moving forward by writing, editing and publishing content relevant to the local community, and supporting the timely delivery of a quality product each week that reflects Impacto’s missional commitments to community journalism. The ideal candidate can work both independently and with a team, and is proactive, with strong organization, writing, and communication skills, and a commitment to ongoing learning and improvement. The Junior Editor position offers an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented professional who is fluent in English and Spanish and passionate about community journalism to build a career in this field during a period of expansion at Impacto. In this role, the Junior Editor will support Impacto Media’s mission of ensuring that communities have a space where their voices are heard and their interests are represented. By highlighting stories, perspectives, and issues that are relevant to our readers, the Junior Editor will help foster a more informed, connected, and engaged community while strengthening participation in the region’s cultural and civic life.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, with strong written and verbal communication skills in both.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience will also be considered.
  • Basic research, fact-checking, and information-verification skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to respond quickly and effectively to challenges.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and time-management skills, with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, collaborate, and adapt within a fast-paced editorial environment.
  • Strong understanding of national issues and Philadelphia’s political, social, cultural, and community dynamics, with the ability to identify topics relevant to local audiences.
  • Ability to monitor local, national, and international news, identify emerging issues, and assess their relevance to Philadelphia’s Latino communities.
  • Strong cultural and social awareness, with a demonstrated interest in community, civic, and cultural issues, and a commitment to accurate, fair, and community-centered journalism.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with WordPress and Trello.

Responsibilities

  • Review and edit content produced by Impacto staff and community journalists for accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar, consistency, tone, and adherence to editorial style.
  • Edit articles, feature stories, community profiles, and digital content in English and Spanish, based on assignments, priorities, and direction from the Editor in Chief.
  • Translate complex information—including public policies, government programs, services, and community resources—into clear, accessible, and culturally relevant pieces.
  • Conduct basic fact checking (verify names, dates, statistics, sources) of articles and translate material while preserving accuracy, meaning, tone, and cultural relevance.
  • Adapt content for print and multimedia formats (articles, newsletters, social media, website).
  • Review page proofs and digital content, identify errors or needed corrections.
  • Write newsroom coverage (research assigned topics, identify relevant sources, gather accurate background information, including local sources and occasional field participation as needed) for public meetings, interviews, breaking news, press releases, and other local stories.
  • Participate in meetings of Impacto staff and production team.
  • Maintain timely and professional communication with contributors, community leaders, partner organizations, and local sources.
  • Monitor local developments, community concerns, and emerging issues.
  • Respond promptly to feedback and complete revisions within established deadlines.
  • Maintain organized records of assignments, interviews, sources, drafts, and supporting materials.
  • Support the collection and organization of photographs, captions, source information, permissions, and other story materials.
  • Be familiar with and ensure fidelity to Impacto’s procedures and guidelines, ensuring community journalists and other stakeholders understand their importance.
  • Work with the team to ensure that coverage reflects Impacto’s missional priorities and delivery of deliverables for grant or sales clients as needed.
  • Uphold Impacto Media’s editorial standards, journalistic ethics, commitment to accuracy, and community-focused mission.
  • Occasionally attend community events, partner meetings, public gatherings, and organizational functions as a representative of Impacto, helping strengthen relationships and supporting newsroom engagement efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
