Junior Consultant (Environmental Scientist)
About The Position
This role is for a Junior or Intermediate Consultant (Environmental Scientist) to join a dynamic team focused on reshaping the mining industry through rehabilitation and reclamation work. The company, Okane, aims to help create a better tomorrow by working with mining companies to return land responsibly and safely, enabling future use that serves both people and the planet. The role involves advocating for meaningful partnerships with communities, including Indigenous rightsholders, and designing solutions that create lasting financial, environmental, and social value. The position offers a variety of tasks, balancing technical office work with field activities, such as developing technical reports, planning field programs, working in remote locations, traversing reclaimed landscapes, and collecting data. Hybrid working arrangements are available for the Calgary office.
Requirements
- A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Earth Sciences, Soil Science, Ecology, Reclamation, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- A valid Class 5 driver's licence, with experience safely operating 4×4 pickup trucks and navigating remote resource roads.
- The ability to travel to project sites across Canada, including remote locations.
Nice To Haves
- Two or more years of environmental consulting experience, including groundwater monitoring, contaminated site assessment and remediation, site reclamation, vegetation assessments, and related environmental field programs.
- Experience preparing high-quality technical reports, work plans, and project documentation.
- Experience using ArcGIS Pro or QGIS to support environmental mapping and data management.
- Experience managing small projects, coordinating field programs, and monitoring project budgets.
- Eligibility for, or actively working towards, a relevant professional or technical designation (e.g., P.Ag., P.Geo., P.Biol or equivalent.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the development of Okane’s Rehabilitation and Reclamation group by contributing ideas and supporting efforts to help clients manage risks related to mine closure in standard and creative ways.
- Support the planning and execution of environmental field programs, including soil, vegetation, groundwater, surface water, and material characterization investigations.
- Prepare clear, high-quality technical reports, work plans, and supporting documentation for mine closure, reclamation, and environmental management projects.
- Interpret field observations and technical data to support practical, science-based solutions for clients.
- Work collaboratively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams to coordinate field activities and support successful project delivery.
- Contribute to reclamation and revegetation planning, monitoring, and implementation across projects at various stages of the mine life cycle.
- Take ownership of work by identifying issues early, contributing practical ideas, and continuously developing technical and consulting skills.
