Junior Automation Engineer

Heartflow•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Heartflow is a medical technology company focused on advancing the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease. They utilize cutting-edge AI-driven technology, including the Heartflow FFR CT Analysis, to provide a non-invasive cardiac test. The company is expanding its product pipeline and team, aiming to revolutionize precision heartcare. Heartflow is a publicly traded company (HTFL) recognized for healthcare innovation, with its products cleared for use in multiple countries and used by over 750,000 patients worldwide. They are undertaking a significant Platform Modernization initiative to enhance their next-generation medical products. The Infrastructure Platform team is looking for engineers passionate about cloud-native technologies and large-scale migrations, particularly those skilled in Kubernetes, to modernize event-driven serverless and containerized workflows. This role involves joining the Platform team as a Junior Automation Engineer. The primary responsibility is to help build, maintain, and scale the internal tools that support the engineering ecosystem. Given that Heartflow's software is a Medical Device (SaMD), the work directly impacts the balance between rapid software innovation and strict FDA/regulatory compliance. The engineer will collaborate with Software Engineering, QA, and Regulatory teams to automate testing, streamline deployments, and generate essential traceability artifacts for a modern healthcare technology environment.

  • Proficiency in Python or other programming languages and at least one shell scripting language (Bash, PowerShell).
  • Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub, issue tracking systems (Jira), and an understanding of continuous integration/continuous deployment concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to debug pipeline failures, API integration issues, and optimize build times.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to document processes clearly for technical and regulatory audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to accelerate coding, debugging, and test generation.
  • Familiarity with integrating LLM APIs into internal automation workflows.
  • Familiarity with Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), ALM/QMS tools (like Ketryx, Greenlight Guru, or Jama), HIPAA, or working within FDA/ISO 13485 quality systems.
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs or Webhooks to connect third-party SaaS applications.
  • Basic knowledge of AWS (or similar cloud providers) and container technologies like Docker.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot integrations between tools like Jira, GitHub, Ketryx etc., ensuring seamless flow of code changes, pull requests, issue tracking, and automated test results for unbroken traceability.
  • Leverage integrated tools to automate the generation of compliance documentation, test reports, and traceability matrices required for FDA and ISO 13485 audits, minimizing manual overhead for engineers.
  • Write and maintain Python and shell scripts to create internal developer tools that improve engineering velocity, reduce manual toil, and enforce code quality.
  • Work alongside QA, DevOps, and Product engineers to troubleshoot build failures, optimize local development environments, and clarify expected software behaviors.
