About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Division of Community Supervision (DCS) is responsible for overseeing supervision of adult offenders on probation, parole, or post-release. The DCS mission is to ensure public safety while helping offenders make positive changes and successfully complete their supervision. DCS collaborates closely with the NC Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, the court system as well as other state agencies, and community partners, particularly those addressing mental health, substance use and re-entry issues faced by our returning citizens. DCS is also responsible for the supervision of offenders who transfer from other states through the Interstate Compact program and has oversight of the Community Service Work Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, human services, psychology, or related field of study from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, human services, psychology, or related field of study from an appropriately accredited institution and two years' experience in the court system, paralegal work, or other directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in the court system, paralegal work, or other directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must behave in a professional manner at all times as this position holds a highly visible position within Community Supervision.
  • Must possess exceptional time management and organizational skills and must be able to work under stressful situations.
  • Must work as a member of a team in a variety of activities to include court intake.

Nice To Haves

  • Work assignments may include providing technical support to staff within the state court through acceptance, examination and processing of legal documents and providing pre-sentence, pre-parole, post release investigations.
  • Ability to exhibit a working knowledge of local and regional community resources to address the placement of monitored offenders.
  • Familiarity with OPUS, CSAS, ICOTS, FMS, AOC software programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the intake of all new supervised and unsupervised probation cases and, in specified areas, monitoring deferred prosecution.
  • Obtain information from criminal offenders regarding new probation and community service cases placed under Community Supervision's authority.
  • Interview offenders.
  • Enter data into the appropriate software system.
  • Assign offenders for supervision.
  • Determine if the offender requires interpreter services.
  • Identify if the offender requires accommodations under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).
  • Provide reporting instructions to the offender.
  • Process intrastate and interstate transfer cases out of court.
  • Monitor for compliance offenders sentenced to community service, including placement of both unsupervised and supervised offenders at an agency to perform work hours.
  • May monitor a low-risk - low-needs offender caseload.
  • Perform a variety of administrative tasks including but not limited to preparing documents and tracking status of cases.
  • Serve as the agency's representative in court, the community, and in maintaining public awareness of the community service program.
