About The Position

Young Life is seeking a full-time Associate Area Director for its Harrisonburg/Rockingham County (H-Rock) team. This role is designed for an individual with several years of Young Life staff experience, ideally 3-5 years, who is ready to help lead, develop, and grow ministry in a college-town setting. The position will primarily champion WyldLife across Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, overseeing ministry in six middle schools and supporting approximately 30 volunteer college leaders. The Associate Area Director will work in cooperation with the Area Director to implement Young Life's mission of introducing kids to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith, by recruiting, training, and deploying others for effective ministry. This role involves spiritual leadership, management, and a commitment to Young Life's Statement of Faith and mission.

Requirements

  • Must have completed Core Training —Phase One.
  • Proven relational skills with both kids and adults.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ideally served 3–5 years on Young Life staff or has completed the Staff Associate process.
  • Loves middle school students and believes deeply in the importance of WyldLife ministry.
  • Enjoys developing college-age volunteer leaders and helping them grow in ministry, maturity, and faith.
  • Can lead with both relational care and organizational clarity.
  • Works well on a team and enjoys being part of something larger than their own direct ministry assignment.
  • Understands or is excited to learn the rhythm of ministry in a college town, including the unique seasons of the college calendar.
  • Willing to step into both direct ministry and behind-the-scenes area responsibilities.
  • Has a heart for evangelism, discipleship, leader development, and long-term ministry health.
  • Willing to fundraise and build a personal support team.
  • Must sign a Statement of Faith.
  • Must profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord.
  • Must subscribe to the statements and policies required of all Young Life staff, including the Young Life Statement of Faith.
  • Must be ready, willing, and able to fulfill ministry functions.
  • Must refrain from conduct and statements that detract from the biblical standards taught and supported by Young Life.
  • Must abide by all policies and practices of Young Life.

Responsibilities

  • Implement Young Life's mission of introducing kids to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith through spiritual leadership and good management.
  • Recruit, train, and deploy others to have an effective Young Life ministry.
  • Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life, including prayer, spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth, health, and church relationships.
  • Seek and maintain relationships and disciplines within an active church community.
  • Actively participate in the spiritual life of the Young Life community.
  • Lead teams and individuals in spiritual development.
  • Ensure all Young Life ministry in the area is designed and carried out with a dependence on prayer stemming from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Assist in casting the area’s vision for reaching every kid within the defined area.
  • Assist in developing consistent gathering times with committee, leaders, and staff to build unity and provide vision and direction.
  • Create a plan for the spiritual leadership of volunteer leaders, staff, and committee members.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and develop specific staff and volunteer leaders, providing necessary resources and experiences.
  • Cooperatively provide quality summer staff, work crew, and adult guests for summer camps.
  • Assist in training leaders, team leaders, and committee on effective teamwork and developing a yearly ministry strategy.
  • Manage part of the local area budget according to TDS principles, as directed by the Area Director.
  • Help develop and provide leadership for the area’s fundraising strategy and ensure excellent communication to donors.
  • Assist in raising necessary funds to carry out the ministry vision for the local area and take on major donor relationships as directed.
  • Help build the Young Life brand via public relations as a tool for working with youth.
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting quality events that reflect Young Life’s capacity to impact kids.
  • Actively engage in all three levels of contact work.
  • Lead or co-lead a model Young Life club; lead/supervise an effective Campaigner ministry with excellence.
  • Observe and evaluate each of the schools/ministries in the local area on a yearly basis, as directed.
  • Develop and implement ongoing plans to maximize Gospel proclamation through camping opportunities.
  • Serve on a summer assignment at a Young Life property, other Young Life camp, or in another position as directed.
  • Adhere to all Young Life policies and procedures and maintain professionalism.
  • Manage finances with stewardship, accountability, and transparency using mission-wide applications.
  • Maintain accurate information on kids, leaders, and donors for area records.
  • Provide clear, prompt, appropriate, and professional communication.
  • Set yearly strategic ministry plans and initiatives to reach every kid; review them regularly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and congruent with gifts, experience, and area needs.
  • Accept and complete short and long-term assignments or projects as directed.
  • Lead and champion WyldLife ministry across six middle schools in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
  • Recruit, train, equip, and care for volunteer college leaders serving in WyldLife.
  • Provide vision, structure, and support for healthy WyldLife teams, clubs, campaigners, contact work, school presence, and camp.
  • Help care for, equip, and mentor 80+ volunteer leaders across the broader H-Rock area.
  • Work closely with the Area Director and staff team to develop leaders, strengthen ministry teams, and care for the spiritual health of the area.
  • Serve as part of a five-person local staff team and a larger multi-area team of 10+ staff.
  • Participate in the larger four-area college ministry effort, especially around freshman recruitment, leader placement, and leader development.
  • Help support the broader needs of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area, including fundraising events, donor development, camp trips, leader training, and area-wide ministry strategy.
  • Build relationships with middle school students, parents, school contacts, volunteer leaders, committee members, and ministry partners.
  • Help lead and strengthen summer camp efforts for WyldLife, including recruiting, preparation, leader support, and follow-up.
  • Raise and maintain approximately $30,000 in personal support.
