About The Position

Under general supervision, with wide latitude for planning or laying out of working details with responsibility for results, must be willing and able to perform difficult and responsible tasks involved in the installation and removal of electric meters, services, and related equipment on customers' premises, connect and disconnect services at the pole, locate and repair all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution systems, answer electric trouble calls to customers' premises. This role also involves tracing and clearing grounds and opens on series circuits, testing and inspecting automatic voltage regulating devices, performing routine checks and tests on relays and automatic reclosing equipment, refusing high voltage substations and line fuses, performing routine checks and maintenance on substation network protectors, transformers, regulators, switching, control and related equipment, conducting various tests (voltage, load, substation, electrolysis, ground, etc.), and making insulation tests on potheads, transformers, cables, and bushings. The position may also involve acting in a supervisory capacity when authorized.

Requirements

  • Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as a Journeyman Lineman, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all qualifications of the previous classifications.
  • Know Company's safety rules.
  • Willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation.
  • Willing and able to render practical first aid on or off the ground.
  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment.
  • Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, and other fires.
  • Supply personal tools used in work.
  • Obtain/Maintain a valid Class A CDL.
  • Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Company regulations and state laws governing disconnects for nonpayment, repossession of merchandise and diversion of current.
  • Have thorough working knowledge of electric circuits and equipment.
  • Know Company's rules and regulations applying to service and meter installations, Underwriters' National Electrical Code, and any state or local regulations governing electrical wiring.
  • Willing and able to read and understand all wiring diagrams and blueprints in connection with the distribution system, meters, switchboard equipment, relays, controls and also related Company equipment on customers' premises.
  • Know Company's electrical and mechanical tagging rules.
  • Have thorough knowledge of the layout and characteristics of the distribution system in the area assigned.
  • Willing and able to study, maintain and report performance of new equipment installed as related to the distribution system.
  • Willing and able to trace, locate and analyze difficult cases of trouble.
  • Proficient in the operation of recloser controls and regulator controls.
  • Willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be particularly alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents.
  • Willing and able to attend and take part in safety meetings.
  • Willing and able to work under unusual surroundings, as well as the normal working conditions pertaining to this job.

Responsibilities

  • Installation and removal of electric meters, services, and related equipment on customers' premises.
  • Connecting and disconnecting services at the pole.
  • Locating and repairing all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Answering electric trouble calls to customers' premises.
  • Tracing and clearing grounds and opens on series circuits.
  • Testing, switching, and inspecting all types of automatic voltage regulating devices.
  • Making routine checks, inspections, and tests of relays on all automatic reclosing equipment.
  • Refusing all classes of high voltage substations and line fuses.
  • Making routine checks, inspections, maintenance, and tests of substation network protectors, transformers, regulators, switching, control, and related equipment.
  • Conducting voltage, load, substation, electrolysis, ground, and other special tests.
  • Making complete insulation tests on potheads, transformers, cables, bushings, etc.
  • Acting in the capacity of supervisor when authorized.
  • Being available to work additional hours, in alternate locations, and/or perform additional duties in connection with storms, outages, emergencies, or other situations as deemed necessary by the company.
