About The Position

Under general supervision, install, repair, and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas, and drainage systems throughout hospital facilities as directed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited trade or vocational school with courses in plumbing and blueprint reading is required.
  • Journeyman licensure is required.
  • Four years of experience in general plumbing repair and maintenance, or equivalent, is required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, schedules and performs plumbing-related activities in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Receives, reviews, and prioritizes assignments and work orders and designates time schedules.
  • Coordinates work with other mechanics and the medical facilities personnel in order to complete work orders without inconveniencing the patients.
  • Fabricates and installs threaded pipes, joint copper pipes, and valves.
  • Repairs sinks, faucets, drains, and associated piping/fixtures.
  • Monitors and inspects work to insure compliance with work specifications, codes, and regulations.
  • Requests administrative permit for installation. Tests equipment for approval for government inspector upon completion of installation.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and routine plumbing service and repair on equipment to ensure proper, safe operation and adherence to JCAHO requirements and safety standards, in accordance with departmental operating procedures, trade standards/codes, and manufacturers operating and repair specifications.
  • Prepares work area by disassembling old systems, and cutting holes in walls and floors for pipes to pass. Prepares pipes and plumbing fixtures for installation, replacement or repair by threading, measuring and shaping.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on medical gas systems, laboratory equipment and similar apparatus.
  • Performs pressure tests on piping and gas lines to ensure proper functioning. Solders and caulks leaks and broken pipes, opens clogged drains and thaws frozen pipes as needed.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions with various plumbing systems including domestic water, steam, medical lasers, sanitary and storm water and heating water systems. Makes necessary repairs in a timely and efficient manner to reduce the amount of down-time and to keep the department operating effectively.
  • Installs and removes plumbing and plumbing fixtures determined by job specifications and work orders in areas of remodeling and construction in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Installs all aspects of plumbing equipment, such as, toilets, faucets, drains and domestic water systems.
  • Repairs and replaces gas lines in stoves and broilers, washers, pumps, heat exchanges, coils, valves and associated equipment on steam systems or boilers.
  • Maintains all required records and information pertinent to costing out work assignments as required. Maintains appropriate instruction manuals, blueprints, and other such materials.
  • Assists in applying cost-effective measures in the utilization of materials and personnel.
  • Communicate with allied health staff, contractors, medical and administrative support staff, regularly, regarding equipment operation and concerns to obtain information in order to resolve problems and minimize the amount of down time.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and orderly work environment in accordance with departmental procedures and UMMS safe work practices.
  • Assures proper care in using tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintains established Medical System and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through educational programs, seminars, and workshops. Researches new techniques, materials, equipment and makes recommendations to supervisor.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
