About The Position

This is a full-time reporting position for a Journalist, open to graduating students or recent graduates. The role involves developing content for various platforms, using digital tools to uncover and break stories, cultivating sources, and collaborating with digital teams to create interactive content. The position requires working under tight deadlines and covering a wide range of news and subjects. Successful candidates will be self-starters with a sense for stories that resonate with a diverse readership and the ability to use digital tools effectively. The role is based remotely in New Brunswick and assigned to the Fredericton Daily Gleaner, with potential for assignment to other Postmedia newsrooms. Some weekend and statutory holiday work may be included.

Requirements

Graduating journalism school student or graduate, or a candidate from a related field.
Ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
Flexibility to work effectively in breaking news, features and short form, along with non-traditional story formats.
Natural curiosity, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles.
Ability to concisely convey meaning to readers.
Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

Newsroom experience is an asset.
Experience and strength in video, podcast presentation and other digital tools is an asset.
A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.
Bilingualism in English/French is an asset.

Responsibilities

Develop content to engage audiences across several platforms tailored to meet the varying needs of web and mobile audiences.
Have story ideas daily and the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
Use social media and other digital tools to uncover what’s breaking and what readers in real time are talking about which quickly needs attention.
Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
Work with digital teams to create interactive content, including text, photo, video and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.
