About The Position

Working remotely in New Brunswick with one of Postmedia’s news teams, ideal candidates are experienced reporters. Recent or graduating students are welcome to apply. Enterprising self-starters and team players, they have a sense for stories that resonate with a diverse readership. A key asset is the ability to use digital tools to break and develop stories and ideas. Successful candidates will work to tight deadlines covering a wide range of news and other subjects. The reporting term is for up to 22 weeks and the reporter will be assigned to the Times & Transcript. Some weekend and statutory holiday work may be included.

Requirements

  • An experienced reporter or journalism school graduate, or a candidate from a related field.
  • Newsroom experience is an asset, but you have the ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
  • Flexible to work effectively in breaking news, features and short form, along with non-traditional story formats.
  • Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help by collaborating with colleagues.
  • A digger with natural curiosity, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
  • A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Recent or graduating students are welcome to apply.
  • Experience and strength in video, podcast presentation and other digital tools is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.
  • Bilingualism in English/French is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Develop content to engage audiences across several platforms tailored to meet the varying needs of web and mobile audiences.
  • Have story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
  • Use social media and other digital tools to uncover what’s breaking and what readers in real time are talking about which quickly needs attention.
  • Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
  • Work with digital teams to create interactive content, including text, photo, video and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.
