About The Position

Working remotely in Moncton, New Brunswick with one of Postmedia’s news teams, ideal candidates are graduating students or recent graduates. Enterprising self-starters and team players, they have a sense for stories that resonate with a diverse readership. A key asset is the ability to use digital tools to break and develop stories and ideas. Successful candidates will work to tight deadlines covering a wide range of news and other subjects. The reporting term is for up to 12 weeks over summer and each intern may be assigned to one of the following newsrooms for that period, the intern will be assigned to the Times & Transcript. Provision may be made by mutual agreement for assignment to other of Postmedia’s newsrooms. Some weekend and statutory holiday work may be included.

Requirements

  • A graduating journalism school student or graduate, or a candidate from a related field.
  • Ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
  • Flexibility to work effectively in breaking news, features and short form, along with non-traditional story formats.
  • Hunger to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help by collaborating with colleagues.
  • Natural curiosity, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
  • Interest not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Newsroom experience is an asset.
  • Experience and strength in video, podcast presentation and other digital tools is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.
  • Bilingualism in English/French is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop content to engage audiences across several platforms tailored to meet the varying needs of web and mobile audiences.
  • Have story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
  • Use social media and other digital tools to uncover what’s breaking and what readers in real time are talking about which quickly needs attention.
  • Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
  • Work with digital teams to create interactive content, including text, photo, video and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.
