Java Microservices Developer Vice President

CitiJersey City, NJ
$142,320 - $213,480Hybrid

About The Position

Citi is looking for a Java Microservices Developer to design, build, and evolve the distributed backend systems that power financial services on a global scale. In this role, you will architect and deliver cloud-native Java microservices using Spring Boot and Kafka, directly shaping the reliability and performance of critical platforms. You will work alongside product managers, architects, and fellow engineers to translate complex requirements into robust, production-ready solutions.

Requirements

  • Hands-on Java development experience of 6 to 10 years, with deep proficiency in JDK 8 and above, including core language features, concurrency utilities, and memory management.
  • Demonstrable track record of designing, developing, and deploying production microservices using Spring Boot and the broader Spring Framework.
  • Ability to build and consume RESTful APIs, implementing asynchronous messaging and service-to-service integrations with proper fault tolerance.
  • Practical knowledge of microservices architecture patterns, including API Gateway, Circuit Breaker, Centralized Configuration, and Service Discovery.
  • Familiarity with containerization using Docker for packaging and deploying distributed applications.
  • Competency with Git-based version control workflows and Agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to operate effectively across both independent workstreams and cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree, university degree, or equivalent practical experience is required; a Master's degree is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience orchestrating containerized workloads with Kubernetes in a production environment.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, particularly for deploying and scaling backend services.
  • Practical use of message brokers or event streaming platforms such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ in distributed system design.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipeline tooling in a microservices context, enabling automated build, test, and deployment workflows.
  • Working knowledge of unit and integration testing frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito, applied to microservices validation.
  • Exposure to artificial intelligence or machine learning use cases, particularly integrating AI-driven capabilities into backend services or distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop scalable, high-performance Java microservices using Spring Boot, applying established architectural patterns including API Gateway, Service Discovery, and Circuit Breaker to ensure system resilience.
  • Build event-driven data pipelines using Apache Kafka, enabling asynchronous communication and decoupled processing across distributed services.
  • Construct cloud-native services with Spring Cloud components, including configuration management, service discovery, and gateway routing, to deliver fault-tolerant integrations.
  • Optimize data access layers using Spring Data JPA, working closely with relational databases to improve query efficiency and overall application throughput.
  • Apply deep expertise in Java concurrency, multi-threading, and the Collections framework to produce safe, performant backend systems.
  • Profile and tune service performance across latency, memory utilization, and throughput, identifying and resolving bottlenecks before they reach production.
  • Lead code reviews with a focus on microservices best practices, delivering constructive feedback that raises the quality and consistency of the codebase.
  • Deploy and manage containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes, supporting the full lifecycle from development through production operations.

Benefits

  • Access to continuous learning and technical development resources, supporting your growth as an engineer working with modern distributed systems.
  • Opportunity to solve complex backend engineering challenges at a global financial institution, with direct impact on the reliability of critical platforms.
  • Competitive financial wellbeing benefits designed to support you over the long term.
  • Wellbeing support and work-life balance initiatives that help you perform at your best inside and outside of work.
  • medical, dental & vision coverage
  • 401(k)
  • life, accident, and disability insurance
  • wellness programs
  • paid time off packages, including planned time off (vacation), unplanned time off (sick leave), and paid holidays.
