About The Position

The jailer is responsible for the operation of the City's jail, the physical intake, detention, release and the well-being of all individuals that are incarcerated in the facility in accordance with Department regulations. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience ; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Applicant must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen at City's expense.
  • Applicant must have a current valid class "C" driver's license and be insurable.
  • Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months upon hire.
  • Knowledgeable of state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of a municipal jail facility.
  • Knowledge of Police Department services.
  • Ability to carry out duties during emergency situations under stressful, life-threatening conditions.
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Ability to deal with disgruntled members of the public in a tactful manner.
  • Ability to execute and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient physical skills to be able to protect oneself and others.
  • Common sense skill to determine the most appropriate response to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
  • Responsible for the well-being of all individuals who are incarcerated at the City's jail facility.
  • Responsible for the physical intake, removal of personal items, detention and release of prisoners including booking, photographing, and fingerprinting each individual; checks the criminal history of all prisoners including whether there are any outstanding warrants.
  • Responsible for getting prisoners to court for their arraignment as well as their transportation and feeding; completes an arrest form.
  • Monitors all prisoners on a regular basis to ensure their safety.
  • Performs other similar or related duties as assigned
  • Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends
