This position involves fabricating, assembling, repairing, and maintaining mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities, and equipment. It requires advanced knowledge and skill for machinery and bench operations, working to close tolerances. The role operates under general supervision and may coordinate activities of lower classified trades personnel. The Mechanic will use a wide variety of hand, bench, and machine shop tools, including precision gauges, gears, fixtures, and lathes. Typical duties include laying out, planning, and completing mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with minimal supervision, setting up and operating machines, working from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions to complete assignments and diagnose troubles. The role may involve assembling complicated mechanical components or models, maintaining mechanical equipment (including some electrical components), performing necessary electrical maintenance on elevators, hoists, conveyors, and electric motors, and performing basic tasks for other trades in emergencies or when incidental to mechanical work.
