This position involves fabricating, assembling, repairing, and maintaining mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities, and equipment. It requires advanced knowledge and skill for machinery and bench operations, working to close tolerances. The role operates under general supervision and may coordinate activities of lower classified trades personnel. The Mechanic will use a wide variety of hand, bench, and machine shop tools, including precision gauges, gears, fixtures, and lathes. Typical duties include laying out, planning, and completing mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with minimal supervision, setting up and operating machines, working from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions to complete assignments and diagnose troubles. The role may involve assembling complicated mechanical components or models, maintaining mechanical equipment (including some electrical components), performing necessary electrical maintenance on elevators, hoists, conveyors, and electric motors, and performing basic tasks for other trades in emergencies or when incidental to mechanical work. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent educational training.
Able to read and write English.
Able to use shop mathematics, charts, tables and handbook formulae.
Able to read and interpret specialized drawings and diagrams.
Completion of approved apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of formal training and experience.
Experience should total a minimum of 5-6 years including apprenticeship time.
Required to use and/or wear safety equipment specified or provided by the University in the manner prescribed.
Required to observe and follow safe work practices at all times as specified by OSHA or other regulations.
Depending upon functional area, may require a valid motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to operate vehicles in a troublefree, safe and skillful manner.
Willingness to work long and irregular hours when assigned.
Reachable by telephone at irregular hours for call-in duty.
Must keep current phone number and address on file with Trade Supervisor and Department Office.

Responsibilities

Fabricates, assembles, repairs and/or maintains mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities and/or equipment.
Performs advanced machinery and bench operations.
Works to close tolerances.
Lays out, plans, and completes all mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with a minimum of supervision.
Sets up and operates own machines as required.
Works from blue prints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions or from experience in completing mechanical assignments and/or diagnosing apparatus, machine, facility, and/or equipment troubles.
May assemble complicated mechanical components, or complete models, instruments, apparatus and equipment.
May specialize in maintaining mechanical equipment or apparatus in good and efficient working order, including some electrical components.
May perform necessary electrical maintenance work on elevators, hoists, conveyors, and electric motors.
May perform basic and routine level work commonly assigned to other trades (e.g., carpentry or electrical tasks) where performance of such tasks is incidental to performance of the mechanical work or is required in response to an emergency situation.
Performs other duties requiring comparable skill and responsibility as directed.
