This role involves installing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining building automation controls panels, associated control equipment and systems, computerized systems, and communication systems. The mechanic will work from electrical and mechanical layouts, wiring diagrams, and verbal direction. They will also install, test, and repair low voltage power distribution circuits and pneumatic systems. A working knowledge of air conditioning (heating, ventilating, cooling), motors, motor starters, and magnetic contractors is required, along with compliance with all applicable codes and standards. The position also includes performing required preventive maintenance on building automation control equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and 3-5 years experience in an electrical/mechanical, HVAC, building automation or related environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and write English and make mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of computerized building automation controls, pneumatic building controls, and familiarity using computers.
  • NYS drivers license.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots and maintains building automation controls panels, associated control equipment and systems, computerized systems and communication systems working from electrical and mechanical layouts, wiring diagrams and verbal direction.
  • Installs, tests, and repairs low voltage power distribution circuits and pneumatic system.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of air conditioning (i.e. heating, ventilating, cooling), motors, motor starters, magnetic contractors, and performs work in compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
  • Performs required preventive maintenance on building automation control equipment.
  • May guide, direct, and assist in training lower classified trades personnel.
  • Installs field cabinets housing electric, electronic and mechanical components, computer cables, electrical circuits,thermostats, sensors, senior wiring, steam meters, polypropylene air lines, relays and pneumatic equipment for automation systems.
  • Inspects, tests, maintains, and calibrates electrical and mechanical components and equipment. Reads all meters.
  • Isolates equipment and component failures in field cabinets, control circuitry, diagnoses and corrects malfunctions by using electrical or other test equipment.
  • Performs complex wiring installations, trouble shooting and repairs defective sensors, air lines, terminal strips, pneumatic switches, etc.
  • Replaces or exchanges defective mechanical and electrical components on systems such as damper motors, shear pins, switches, transformers and sensors according to electrical and mechanical schematic diagrams.
  • Monitors mechanical and electrical systems; modifies input variables and programming syntax of established programs via computer data entry. Develops equipment description of operations as required. Maintains records of all program modifications and informs appropriate department personnel of respective changes.
  • Works from blueprint, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of daily work.
  • Complies with safety regulations of the University and Local, State, and Federal Agencies.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and insures that tools and equipment are kept in good working order.
  • Performs other duties requiring comparable skills and responsibilities as directed.
  • Inspects, tests, and maintains the building automation control panels.
  • Monitors and maintains the University's main Building Automation System computerized Front End, including period system back up, creation and/or modification of system graphics.
  • Performs off site preventive maintenance and related building automation service work.
  • Maintains and updates the University's central project control submittal library.
  • Assists the HVAC/R mechanics in automation control problem troubleshooting through interaction with a computer, phone and or radio. Assists other trades personnel with problem solving.
  • Maintains a computerized database of critical equipment served/monitored through interface with customers and filed data verification.
